It’s the first time Liverpool defender Steven Gerrard has been publicly linked with biting a dog.
The 34-year-old was charged with animal cruelty last year after biting his dog on the leg at the home of his friend and former Liverpool team-mate, Jack Butland.
A trial on Thursday began with Gerrard allegedly biting Butland’s pet, which was left with a black eye and several broken teeth.
The trial will hear evidence that Butland did not properly handle the animal’s bite.
The Liverpool player denied the charges, telling the jury that the dog “hadn’t done anything wrong” when he attacked Gerrard.
